How does a date calculator work?
A date calculator finds the difference between two dates by counting the total number of days between them. It converts both dates to a common reference point — typically midnight on each day — and measures the span in days. The result is a single number representing how many full calendar days separate the start date from the end date.
Months and years make this more complex than simple subtraction. Months have different lengths — February has 28 or 29 days while January has 31 — so the number of days between two dates depends on which months fall in between. Leap years add an extra day every four years, giving those years 366 days instead of 365. A calculator must account for every varying month length and leap day to return an accurate total.

How many days are in a year?
A standard year has 365 days. A leap year has 366 days, with the extra day falling on 29 February. Leap years occur every four years, except for century years not divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not. Over any four-year period, the average is 365.25 days per year.
What is the difference between calendar days and business days?
Calendar days include every day of the week — weekends and holidays included. Business days (or working days) count only weekdays, typically Monday through Friday, and often exclude public holidays. How do I add days to a date?
To add days to a date, start with your base date and count forward on a calendar, rolling over at each month boundary. For example, adding 30 days to 15 January gives 14 February in a normal year or 15 February in a leap year. You can also use Clockr in reverse — set your start date and adjust the end date until the day count matches the number you want to add.
How many weeks are in a year?
A year contains 52 full weeks plus one or two extra days. In a 365-day year, 365 ÷ 7 equals 52 weeks and 1 day; in a leap year, 366 ÷ 7 equals 52 weeks and 2 days. That is why a date like your birthday falls on the next weekday each year — or two weekdays later after a leap year.
What is the longest possible gap between two dates in history?
In theory, the longest gap is bounded only by how far back and forward you can measure. From the earliest known written records (around 3200 BCE) to centuries into the future, the span runs into millions of days. Why do leap years exist?
Earth takes roughly 365.25 days to orbit the sun, not exactly 365. Without leap years, our calendar would drift by about one day every four years, and seasons would gradually shift into the wrong months. Adding 29 February every four years — with century-year exceptions — keeps the calendar aligned with the solar year and the changing seasons.
