Back to School Countdown
Count down to your first day back — term start dates vary, so enter yours below
How it works
Unlike Christmas or Halloween, there is no single global "back to school" date. Term start dates are decided at many levels — by national education authorities, regional governments, individual school districts, and sometimes even individual schools. A child in one US state may return weeks before a child in another, and private schools often set their own calendars entirely independently of nearby state schools.
That said, some broad patterns exist. In the UK, most state schools return in the first week of September, often just after the August bank holiday. In the United States, start dates vary enormously — from early August in parts of the South and Midwest to early or mid September in the Northeast and West Coast. Southern Hemisphere countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa follow entirely different academic calendars, with the school year typically running from late January or February through to December, divided into three or four terms.
Because of this variation, Clockr does not guess your start date — you enter it yourself. If you are unsure of the exact date, check your school's website, the welcome letter or newsletter sent to parents, or your local education authority's published term dates. Once you have the date, enter it above and the live countdown will show exactly how long remains until the first day back.
Frequently asked questions
When does school go back in the UK?
Most UK state schools return in the first week of September, typically the Monday or Tuesday after the August bank holiday. Exact dates vary by local authority and school type — academies and independent schools set their own calendars. Scotland often returns slightly earlier, in mid to late August. Always check your school's website or your local council's term dates page for the precise date.
When does school go back in the US?
There is no single US back-to-school date. Start dates are set by individual school districts and vary widely by state — from early August in states like Arizona and Georgia to early or mid September in New York, Massachusetts, and parts of the West Coast. Many districts publish their academic calendars online; search for your district name plus "school calendar" to find yours.
Why do school start dates vary so much?
School calendars reflect local decisions about holidays, weather, agricultural history, teacher training days, and state or national regulations. In the US, education is largely decentralised — each district sets its own schedule. Even within one country, urban and rural areas, public and private schools, and different age groups can all start on different days.
How do I find out my child's school start date?
The most reliable source is your school directly — check its website, parent portal, or welcome pack. Schools usually send term dates to parents by email or post in the weeks before the summer break. You can also search your local education authority's website; most publish a full academic year calendar listing term start and end dates for all schools in the area.
Is the school year the same in every country?
No. School calendars differ significantly around the world. Many Northern Hemisphere countries run roughly September to June or July, while Southern Hemisphere nations such as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa typically start in late January or February and finish in November or December. Some countries use a trimester system; others use two or four terms. There is no universal academic calendar.
Can I save or share my back-to-school countdown?
You can bookmark this page in your browser to return to your countdown any time. Clockr does not store your date on a server — it stays in your browser session only.
