About Eid
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, with prayers, feasting, and giving to charity (Zakat al-Fitr). It is a day of gratitude and community after a month of spiritual reflection.
Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. It coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage and is observed with prayer, animal sacrifice (Qurbani), and sharing meat with family and those in need.
Both Eids are among the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar, bringing families and communities together in worship and joy.
How is the Eid countdown calculated?
This countdown targets midnight on the listed Eid date in your local time zone. By default, it shows whichever of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha comes next on the calendar. Use the tabs above to count down to a specific Eid instead.
Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia and much of the Muslim world. Because Islamic months begin with the sighting of the new crescent moon, confirmed dates can shift by a day in some countries and communities.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Fitr ("Festival of Breaking the Fast") celebrates the end of Ramadan and falls on 1 Shawwal. Eid al-Adha ("Festival of Sacrifice") honours Ibrahim's devotion and falls on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, during the Hajj season. Both are public holidays in many Muslim-majority countries, but they mark different events and occur at different times of the Islamic year.
Why do the dates change every year?
The Islamic calendar is lunar, with each month lasting about 29 or 30 days. Without a leap-month system like the Hebrew calendar, Islamic dates drift earlier in the Gregorian calendar by roughly 10–12 days each year. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha therefore move through the seasons over a 33-year cycle.
Why might my local Eid date differ by a day?
Many communities determine Eid by actual moon sighting rather than astronomical calculation alone. If the crescent is not sighted on the expected evening, Ramadan or Dhu al-Hijjah may be extended by one day, shifting Eid accordingly. Saudi Arabia and some countries use the Umm al-Qura calendar; others follow local sighting committees.
How long do Eid celebrations last?
Eid al-Fitr is typically celebrated for one to three days, depending on country and tradition. Eid al-Adha lasts three to four days in many places, aligning with the days of Tashriq after the sacrifice. This countdown targets the first day of each Eid.
