How it works
The Earth is divided into time zones — offset bands measured from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), the global reference clock. Each zone is roughly 15 degrees of longitude wide, though political borders and historical choices mean real zones do not follow neat meridian lines. This page shows a simplified strip from UTC−12 to UTC+14 with major cities in each band.
Each block displays the current wall-clock time for that UTC offset, updating every second in your browser. Clockr detects your IANA time zone automatically and highlights the matching band. Tap or click any zone to expand a panel with representative cities, their live local times, and today's date — powered by the same Intl API used on our World Clock.
This is a reference visualization, not a geographic map. Fractional offsets such as UTC+5:30 (India) and UTC+5:45 (Nepal) appear as separate bands because some countries align clocks to the sun rather than whole-hour meridians. Daylight saving can shift cities between bands seasonally — the highlight always reflects your offset right now.

What is UTC?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the international standard that all time zones are measured against. It replaced GMT as the primary reference in 1972 and is kept precise using atomic clocks. When a zone is labeled UTC+9, local time is nine hours ahead of UTC; UTC−5 is five hours behind. See our UTC/GMT Converter for direct conversions.
Why do some time zones have unusual offsets like UTC+5:45?
Most zones differ from UTC by whole hours, but some countries chose fractional offsets to better match local solar noon. Nepal uses UTC+5:45 — a quarter-hour ahead of India's UTC+5:30 — and Chatham Islands use UTC+12:45 in summer. Iran (UTC+3:30) and Newfoundland (UTC−3:30) follow the same logic with half-hour steps.
How is my time zone detected?
Your browser reports an IANA time zone identifier (such as
Europe/London or America/New_York)
through the Intl API. Clockr calculates your current UTC offset
from that identifier and highlights the matching band on the strip.
No location permission is requested — only the time zone setting
your device already uses.
Why does my highlighted zone change in summer?
Countries that observe daylight saving time shift their clocks by one hour for part of the year. London moves from UTC+0 (GMT) to UTC+1 (BST); New York moves from UTC−5 to UTC−4. The highlight follows your actual offset at this moment, so it will jump between adjacent bands when clocks change.
How many time zones are there?
There are 24 principal meridian-based hours, but political and fractional zones bring the total to about 38 distinct UTC offsets in use today, spanning UTC−12 through UTC+14. This map shows the most commonly referenced bands; our World Clock lists live times for 200+ individual cities.
