How it works
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is a lunar calendar: each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days. A full Hijri year is about 354 or 355 days — roughly 10 to 12 days shorter than a Gregorian solar year. That is why Islamic dates appear to move backward through the seasons over time.
The Gregorian calendar, by contrast, is tied to Earth's orbit around the Sun and keeps seasons aligned with fixed calendar months. When you convert between the two systems, you are mapping one civil day to another using a standard astronomical table — not observing the moon directly.

Why is the Hijri year shorter than the Gregorian year?
A Hijri year is based on 12 lunar months totalling about 354 days, while a Gregorian year follows the solar cycle of roughly 365 days. Lunar months are shorter than solar months, so Hijri dates drift earlier in the Gregorian calendar by about 10 to 12 days each year. Over roughly 33 Hijri years, the same month will have cycled through all seasons.
When is Islamic New Year 1448 AH?
Under the Umm al-Qura calendar used here, 1 Muharram 1448 AH falls on 16 June 2026. Some communities may observe the new year a day later depending on local moon sighting — commonly 17 or 18 June — but 8 July 2026 is consistently 23 Muharram 1448 AH on this calendar (12 Muharram is 27 June 2026).
Is this conversion exact?
For the Umm al-Qura tabular calendar, the conversion is mathematically exact within the supported date range (about 1343 to 1500 AH). However, many Muslims determine month beginnings by actual moon sighting rather than calculation alone. In practice, your local mosque or national authority may announce Eid or Ramadan a day earlier or later than the date shown here.
What is the difference between AH and CE dates?
AH stands for Anno Hegirae — "in the year of the Hijra" — marking years since the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. CE (Common Era) is the Gregorian year count used internationally. The two systems count years from different starting points and use different month lengths, so a single civil day maps to a specific Hijri date and vice versa, but the year numbers are not simply offset by a fixed amount.
Which calendar does Saudi Arabia use?
Saudi Arabia publishes official dates using the Umm al-Qura calendar, which is based on astronomical calculations of the new moon. This converter follows that same standard. Other countries may follow local sighting committees, which can lead to different dates for the same event in different parts of the world.
